Research and Data Strategist

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

General Responsibilities:

Under the general direction of the Executive Director (ED), the Research and Data Strategist develops, plans, and provides services in specified programs including, but not limited to data collection and management, assessment and evaluation, and quality improvement. The Research and Data Strategist supports Region 2 by leading the development and implementation of education and outreach programming for research data services for health sciences librarians, researchers, health professionals, consumers, public health workers, and other users of the National Library of Medicine's (NLM's) resources.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overall

  • Work with the ED to develop goals, objectives, and milestones for the Region.
  • Lead data and evaluation strategy (identify, track, and report performance measures, activity reporting, CiviCRM membership data, Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) metrics).
  • Drive internal process evaluation and continuous quality improvement for RML (environmental scan, needs assessment member survey, CQI projects for internal RML processes).
  • Develop regional education and outreach strategy for research data services (RDS).
  • Participate in regional and national committees as appropriate.
  • Promote NNLM membership, services, and products to community partners. Serve as a liaison.

Outreach

  • Identify underserved areas and develop outreach plans including training, demonstrations, follow-up, and evaluation in service area.
  • Continually monitor and review evaluations and feedback for program and process improvement.
  • Identify and develop new network partnerships with unaffiliated/underserved health care professionals, consumers, librarians, and community groups.
  • Respond to network member requests for marketing and training materials on NLM products and services.
  • Promote and exhibit NLM Resources at national, regional, and local conferences.
  • Participate on committees at the local, regional, and national level.

Education

  • Provide online and/in-person reference, consulting, training, and technical advice in support of NLM systems.
  • Collaborate with National Center for Data Services (NCDS) to train NNLM users on research data services topics.
  • Apply adult learning theories, principles, and practices to support teaching and learning.
  • Teach national NNLM courses annually.
  • Translate RD principles to non-information professionals.
  • Plan, design, promote, and teach online and in-person curriculum and classes related to NLM programs, services, and informational resources to librarians, consumers, and health professionals.
  • Develop and evaluate instructional programs.

Sub-award Support

  • Provide network members with support as a liaison.
  • Solicit applications for awards and subcontracts.
  • Serve as member of proposal review team; make recommendations for funding.

MUSC Libraries Faculty

  • Engage in research, scholarship, and university and professional service opportunities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Fulfill faculty duties as outlined in the MUSC Faculty Handbook.

General Duties

  • Other duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred Education and Experience

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or an advanced degree in Education, Marketing, Communications, or Anthropology.
  • Knowledge of current research, technologies, methods, and trends in User Experience.
  • Evidence of at least three years of supervisory experience in an academic setting.

Preferred Experience

  • ALA-accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree in another appropriate discipline.
  • Experience teaching to a variety of audience levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written communications.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a demanding and changing environment with all levels of staff and members of the public.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in teaching and learning in library instruction.

Preferred Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of NLM and NCBI databases.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data management practices, data curation practices, and preservation principles and practices.
  • Understanding of the research life cycle.
  • Familiarity with statistical and/or qualitative analysis software and data visualization.
  • Significant experience in library or community outreach or similar work.
  • Project management skills.
  • Apply adult learning theories, principles, and practices to support teaching and learning.
  • Knowledge of NLM’s programs and strategic initiatives.
  • A record of professional, scholarly research activity.
  • Membership and activity in professional associations such as the Medical Library Association, the American Library Association, or other relevant associations.

Faculty rank is targeted at Associate Professor.

Salary is commensurate with education/experience. A minimum of $60,000 for the candidate with the required education and appropriate experience.
