Community Engagement and Outreach Strategist

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

General Responsibilities:

Under the general direction of the Executive Director (ED), the Community Engagement and Outreach Strategist uses a community-organizing approach to engage with existing members and to recruit new members, with a special focus on underrepresented and medically underserved populations. The position serves as the main point of contact for membership within the region. The Community Engagement and Outreach Strategist will work to ensure adequate resources are made available to support initiatives using NLM products and services. The position also serves as the MLA Disaster Information Specialist for the Region and is Chair of the region’s Emergency Response and Preparedness Advisory Committee (ERPAC).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overall

  • Work with the ED to develop goals and objectives for the Region.
  • Evaluate, assess, and report programming and outcomes. Provide quarterly reports of membership data.
  • Participate on committees at the local, regional and national level as appropriate.
  • Promote NLM services and products by continually reaching out to community partners and other organizations.
  • Maintain established methods and create new ways to effectively communicate with members and partners throughout the Region.
  • Establish membership pathway workflow and follow-up with contacts after conferences or other meetings.
  • Lead recruitment efforts and campaigns to add members and partners to the Region.
  • Create and support key communication efforts. Create standalone promotional packets for various community stakeholders and groups with accompanying guides for usage.
  • Collaborate with Region 2 team members, across the national NNLM network and MUSC Libraries and Faculty
  • Serves as the Disaster Recovery MLA Disaster Information Specialist for the Region
  • Engage in research, scholarship, and university and professional service opportunities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development
  • Fulfill faculty duties as outlined in the MUSC Libraries Faculty Handbook

Outreach

  • Use a community-organizing approach to engage with members/nonmembers
  • Develop membership, outreach, engagement plans/subplans
  • Respond to network member requests for marketing and training materials on NLM products and services
  • Promote and exhibit NLM Resources at national, regional and local conferences
  • Develop and expand partnerships with first responders and organizations focused on emergency preparedness and recovery for these natural disasters is beneficial to the Region.
  • Maintain an Emergency Response and Preparedness Plan to ensure uninterrupted service during large-scale threats, disasters, and localized emergencies especially those that are most common in the region.
  • Serve as Chair of the region’s Emergency Response and Preparedness Advisory Committee (ERPAC)
  • Provide outreach services to underrepresented and medically underserved populations.
  • Forge new and leverage current relationships with potential members and partners.
  • Work with the Technology and Innovation Strategist to identify and support DOCLINE participants.

Education

  • Provide online and/in-person reference, consulting, training, and technical advice in support of NLM systems
  • Apply adult learning theories, principles, and practices to support teaching and learning.
  • Plan, design, promote, and teach online and in-person curriculum and classes and workshops related to NLM programs, services, and informational resources to librarians, consumers, and health professionals.
  • Monitor regional trends as well as previously identified needs and plan programming targeting those specific audiences.
  • Develop and evaluate instructional programs.

Sub-award Support

  • Provide network members support in project planning, proposal preparation, submission, and project evaluation.
  • Solicit applications for awards and subcontracts.
  • Serve as member of proposal review team; make recommendations for funding.
  • Post award, monitor and report on network member project progress for those funded.
  • Aid and consult subawardees

MUSC Libraries Faculty

  • Engage in research, scholarship, and university and professional service opportunities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required qualifications

  • ALA-accredited graduate degree or an advanced degree in another discipline. 
  • Experience teaching to a variety of audience levels. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written communications. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a demanding and changing environment with all levels of staff and members of the public. 
  • Ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations. 
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in teaching and learning in library instruction. 
  • Knowledge of technology applications and trends in health sciences libraries.  

Preferred qualifications

  • Knowledge of NLM and NCBI databases. 
  • Significant experience in a library or community outreach, or similar work. 
  • Knowledge of NLM’s programs and strategic initiatives. 
  • A record of professional, scholarly research activity.

Salary is commensurate with education/experience. A minimum of $60,000 for the candidate with the required education and appropriate experience.
